Order Preparation – Proper preparation of your quilt top and quilt back is essential to a good result.

Once your order is received at The Southern Bobbin.  I will e-mail to confirm the details and estimated completion date.  Once you confirm, work will begin.

No work will start prior to this process.

  • Please DO NOT pin or baste your layer.
  • The batting and backing should measure at least 6” – 8” inches longer and 6” – 8” inches wider than your quilt top. The more I have to work with the better your results will be.  For example, if your quilt top measures 50″ x 70″, the batting and backing should measure at least 58″ x 78″.

Quilt Top

  • Press seams well.  Be sure the top lies flat.  If there are bumps it will not quilt flat and could pucker.
  • The top should be free of embellishments.  Please add them after quilting is complete.
  • Clip all loose threads from the front and back.  If you do not, it could show through light fabric.
  • If your quilt has a definite “TOP”, please apply a pin or piece of masking tape to the quilt top and backing to identify it.

  • If you send batting, please check the package to be sure it is suitable for machine quilting.  I do have batting available here.  Please see the batting section for more details.

  •  Sides should be straight, and the backing squared.  Press backing and all seams.  Backing should measure 8″ wider and 8″ longer than the quilt top.  Bed sheets are not suitable.  Backs that require squaring or pressing will incur an additional charge.  Note, not all fabric off the bolt from manufacturer is straight.  Please double check.

  • Please cut 2-1/4” straight grain binding strips.  The number of strips is calculated by measuring width + length + width + length + 20″.   Divide that number by the width of fabric to determine your number of strips.  Always calculate up if your measurement is a fraction.  Example:  58″ + 78″ + 58″ + 78″ + 20″ = 292″ divided by 42″ (width of fabric) = 6.952 strips you would provide 7 strips. Stitch all needed strips together and press in half with wrong sides facing each other. Binding cost is calculated by the linear inch (width + length + width + length ).  See Binding pricing page for cost.
